Act It Out

A dumb charades film game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

Act It Out is dumb charades with films for four to eight players in two teams. The other team picks a film, the actor sees it on their phone and acts it out with no words, and their team shouts guesses. The big screen runs the clock, shows the language and the number of words, and keeps the score. Films come from Malayalam, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and English cinema.

How to play Act It Out

  1. Players are split into two teams in the order they joined. The teams take turns to act.
  2. At the start of each turn the watching team sees three films on their phones and votes for the one they want the actor to act. If nobody votes in 8 seconds, one is picked at random.
  3. The actor reads the title on their phone, then has 60 seconds to act it out without speaking. Their team-mates shout guesses out loud.
  4. When the team says the title, the actor taps Got it. A film guessed within 20 seconds scores 3 points, within 40 seconds 2 points, and after that 1 point. The actor can skip once per turn and gets a different film.
  5. If time runs out, the team that picked the film scores 1 point.
  6. If the actor speaks, the watching team taps Cheat. When most of the watching team call it, the point does not count.
  7. Everyone gets a turn to act if time allows; a game lasts at most 8 minutes. The last pair of turns counts double, and the team with more points wins.

Controls

The actor has Start, Got it and Skip buttons, and can tap the word they are acting so the big screen shows it. The watching team votes for a film and has a Cheat button. The guessing team just shouts.

Tips

  • Use the classic signs shown on the big screen: fingers for the number of words, fingers on your arm for syllables, tug your ear for sounds like.
  • Act one word at a time and tap it on your phone, so your team sees which word you are on and the words they have already got.
  • When you pick a film for the other team, choose one that is hard to act: a time-out gives your team a point.

Start Act It Out in three steps

  1. Open play.codewithshamil.com on a TV or laptop and press Host a game.
  2. Connect each phone to the same WiFi and scan the QR code on the screen.
  3. The first player picks Act It Out from the menu on their phone.
