Penalty Shootout is a 3D football penalty game for one to eight players. The goal and the keeper are on the big screen. The shooter aims and strikes on their phone while the keeper picks a dive in secret on theirs, and everyone else calls where the shot will go. Played alone, it is you against a computer opponent with its own habits.

How to play Penalty Shootout

  1. Every kick has a shooter and a keeper. With two players you take turns, five kicks each, and the shootout ends early when one side can no longer catch up.
  2. With three to eight players everyone shoots and everyone keeps in turn, and each shooter faces a different keeper from one round to the next. Bigger groups take fewer kicks each so a game stays short: five for three players, four for four, three for five, and two for six to eight.
  3. The shooter taps a spot on the goal, then presses Shoot while the moving needle is in the green. Better timing gives a faster, more accurate shot. Corners are hard to save but easy to hit the post or miss.
  4. At the same time the keeper picks one of six dives: left, middle or right, high or low. The right side and the right height saves most shots.
  5. Players who are not involved call left, middle or right before the kick. The big screen shows which way each shooter went before and which way each keeper dived, so everyone can look for habits.
  6. Points: 3 for a goal, 2 for the keeper when the shot is kept out (a save, the post or a miss), and 1 for a right call. If players are level at the top after the last kick, they go to sudden death: each takes one more kick per round, and a player who scores when the others do not wins. After four rounds of sudden death the tie stands.
  7. Alone, you take five kicks and face five against a computer opponent who either stays big in the middle, always dives early, or remembers your favourite side.

Controls

The shooter taps the goal drawn on the phone and presses Shoot. The keeper taps one of six dive arrows. Everyone else taps Left, Middle or Right. Shooter and keeper have eight seconds: after that the game takes a weak kick for the shooter, and a keeper who has not chosen stays low in the middle.

Tips

  • Timing matters as much as aim: a well-timed shot into a corner beats a keeper who guessed the side but the wrong height.
  • Keepers: look for habits. Most people favour one side.
  • The needle speeds up every round and is fastest in sudden death.
