Carrom is the classic Indian board game, played on a wooden board on your TV or laptop with each player flicking the striker from their own phone. Two, three or four players can play; four players play two against two as partners sitting opposite. Playing alone, you practise against a computer player. The rules are simplified point carrom, so every coin counts for everyone.
How to play Carrom
- The board holds 19 coins: 9 white, 9 black and the red queen. On your turn, slide the striker along your baseline, drag back to aim and set the power, and let go to flick.
- Every coin you pocket scores for you or your team: a white coin is 20 points and a black coin is 10. Pocket any coin and you shoot again.
- The queen is worth 50 points, but only if you cover it: pocket a white or black coin in the same shot or on your very next shot. If you do not, the queen goes back to the centre.
- Pocketing the striker is a foul. Any coin pocketed on that shot goes back to the centre, your last pocketed coin goes back too and its points are taken off, and the turn passes.
- While someone aims, their opponents can call the shot on their phones: Pot or Miss. A correct call is worth 5 points.
- You have 20 seconds for each shot. If time runs out, the striker is flicked as it is aimed, or straight ahead if you have not aimed. In the last minute of the four, every coin scores double: white 40, black 20 and the queen 100. The game ends when every white and black coin has been pocketed, or after four minutes once the player at the board finishes their turn. The most points wins.
Controls
Your phone shows the board from your side. Drag the bar under the board (or the striker) to slide it along your line, then drag back anywhere on the board like a slingshot: the line shows where the striker will go, and the further you pull, the harder the shot. Let go to shoot.
Tips
- A gentle shot that pockets a coin is worth more than a hard shot that scatters the board: you keep the turn.
- Go for the queen when a white or black coin sits close to a pocket, so you can cover it straight after.
- Calling Miss on a long, hard shot is usually right.
