Paint Wars

A territory painting game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

  • Solo or up to 8
  • Single player and multiplayer
  • Plays in the browser

Paint Wars is a territory painting game for one to eight players. Everyone drives a paint roller around one floor on the big screen and steers it with a thumb stick on their phone. Every square you roll over takes your colour, and closing a loop fills the inside too. The player with the most floor after 60 seconds wins. When you play alone, two computer painters join you and you chase your best percentage.

How to play Paint Wars

  1. Your roller never stops. Point the stick where you want it to go; let go and it keeps rolling straight.
  2. Every square you roll over becomes your colour, even if a rival painted it first.
  3. Close a loop with your own colour and everything inside fills with your colour at once, rival paint included. A pocket bigger than 220 squares (about a quarter of the floor) does not fill; drive across it to split it into smaller pockets that do.
  4. Boost gives a short burst of speed; it is ready again after four seconds.
  5. Drive into a rival from the side or from behind to stun them for a second (longer if you were boosting) and splash your colour under them. Two rollers that meet head on at the same speed just bounce apart.
  6. Power-ups appear on the floor, most often inside the leader's paint: a paint bomb splats a big circle of your colour when you tap Splat, and speed paint makes you faster with a wider brush for six seconds. Bumping a player who carries a paint bomb knocks it loose, and you take it if you do not already have one.
  7. The last ten seconds are announced and bring extra power-ups. Most floor at the end wins; the percentage bars on the big screen show the score all the time.

Controls

A thumb stick to steer, a Boost button and a Splat button for paint bombs. Turn the phone sideways to hold it like a gamepad.

Tips

  • Small loops close fast and are safe. A long loop wins more floor but takes longer to close.
  • Raid the leader: their paint is where most power-ups appear, and rolling over it takes floor away from them.
  • Save your boost to ram a rival from the side, or to grab a power-up before someone else does.
  • Carrying a paint bomb draws a ring on the big screen showing where it would splat. Use it before someone bumps you and steals it.
