Sketch It

A draw and guess party game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

Sketch It is a draw-and-guess party game for three to eight players. Each turn one player gets a secret word on their phone and draws it with a finger. The drawing appears live on the TV or laptop while everyone else types guesses on their own phones. Everyone draws once, and the most points wins.

How to play Sketch It

  1. The drawer picks one of three secret words: easy, medium or hard. A medium word is worth one and a half times the points and a hard word double. Pick nothing for 8 seconds and you get the easy word.
  2. The drawer has 60 seconds to draw (less in bigger groups: 55 seconds with five players, 48 with six, 42 with seven and 36 with eight). There are eight colours, an eraser, a thin and a thick brush, undo and clear.
  3. Everyone else types as many guesses as they like. A right guess scores 100 to 300 points (before the word bonus): the faster, the more. The first right guess gets 50 extra.
  4. Right answers stay secret: the TV only shows who got it. Wrong guesses appear on the big screen, and a guess that is nearly right gets a private "so close" on your phone.
  5. Letters of the word appear on the TV as the clock runs down (up to three, never more than half).
  6. The drawer earns half of every right guesser's points (rounded to the nearest 5, not counting the first-guess bonus). The turn ends when time runs out or a moment after everyone has guessed.

Controls

The drawer draws on the phone screen with a finger and has colour, eraser, brush size, undo and clear buttons. Guessers type on their phone keyboard and press Send. Players who already guessed can send cheers to the big screen.

Tips

  • Draw the big outline first, then the details. Most words are guessed from the shape alone.
  • A hard word is worth double for you and the guessers, so pick it when you feel confident.
  • Watch the wrong guesses on the TV: they tell you what to fix in your drawing.
  • Guess early and often. There is no penalty for a wrong guess.

Start Sketch It in three steps

  1. Open play.codewithshamil.com on a TV or laptop and press Host a game.
  2. Connect each phone to the same WiFi and scan the QR code on the screen.
  3. The first player picks Sketch It from the menu on their phone.
