Mafia Night

A hidden role party game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

Mafia Night is the classic hidden-role party game (also known as Mafia or Werewolf) for five to eight players, with the TV as the narrator. Every player gets a secret role on their own phone, so nobody needs paper slips or a moderator. The Mafia try to take over the town; everyone else tries to find them and vote them out.

How to play Mafia Night

  1. Roles are dealt in secret: one Mafia member with five or six players, two with seven or eight, plus one Doctor, one Detective and Villagers. Mafia members see who their partner is.
  2. At night every player still in the game taps a name on their phone, so nobody can tell who is doing what. The Mafia pick who to take out, the Doctor protects one player, the Detective checks one player (never the same one twice) and learns whether they are Mafia, and Villagers mark a secret hunch.
  3. At dawn the big screen says who was taken and reveals their role, or that the Doctor saved them. If one name leads the Villagers' secret hunches, it is shown too.
  4. Then the town talks for up to 75 seconds and votes on the phones, with a live tally on the TV. The player with the most votes is out and their role is revealed. A tie, or more votes for Skip, means nobody is out.
  5. The town wins when every Mafia member is out. The Mafia win when they equal or outnumber everyone else. A game lasts at most ten minutes: on the last day the town must vote out a Mafia member or the Mafia win.
  6. Players who are out become ghosts and can send Boo, Haha and Sus to the big screen. Town ghosts also answer a ghost poll on who the Mafia are, shown at the end.
  7. Points: 10 for everyone on the winning side, 3 for surviving, 2 for each Mafia member the Detective finds, 3 for each Doctor save, 2 for a town player who votes for a Mafia member who is then voted out, 1 for each Mafia member still in the game every time the town votes out an innocent player, and 2 for a town ghost whose poll pick was Mafia. Places are decided by points.

Controls

Hold the card on your phone to peek at your role. At night and during the vote, tap a player. In the discussion, tap Ready to vote; when more than half the living players are ready, the vote starts five seconds later.

Tips

  • Everyone taps at night, so tap like everyone else and keep a straight face.
  • The Doctor may protect themselves, but not the same player two nights in a row.
  • Detective, think before you reveal what you know: the Mafia will come for you next.

Start Mafia Night in three steps

  1. Open play.codewithshamil.com on a TV or laptop and press Host a game.
  2. Connect each phone to the same WiFi and scan the QR code on the screen.
  3. The first player picks Mafia Night from the menu on their phone.
