Sumo Smash

A 3D sumo party game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

Sumo Smash is a 3D party brawler for one to eight players. Round wrestlers in each player's colour shove each other around a ring on the TV or laptop, and every player moves theirs with a thumb stick on their phone. Push everyone else into the water to win the round. When you play alone, three computer wrestlers join you.

How to play Sumo Smash

  1. Move with the thumb stick. Wrestlers are heavy and slide, so they speed up and slow down gradually.
  2. Hold DASH to charge a ram, aim with the stick, and let go. Holding longer, up to about 0.7 seconds, rams harder. After a ram, DASH takes just over a second to recharge.
  3. While you hold DASH you brace: you move slowly but are harder to push.
  4. Six seconds into each round the ring starts to crumble from the outside, losing a band every four seconds until nothing is left.
  5. Fall into the water and you become a ghost: fly over the ring and drop a boulder that blasts nearby wrestlers away when it lands.
  6. The last wrestler on the ring wins the round and 3 points. Knocking someone off scores 1 point: it counts when they fall within 2.5 seconds of your bump or your boulder.
  7. A game is three rounds and the final round scores double. With two players it is a best-of-five duel: the first to three round wins takes it.

Controls

A thumb stick to move (or to fly as a ghost) and one big DASH button: hold it to charge and brace, let go to ram. As a ghost the same button drops a boulder. Turn the phone sideways to hold it like a gamepad.

Tips

  • Charge while you close in and let go when you are almost touching. A full-power ram from the side sends people flying.
  • Hold DASH when someone charges at you: braced, you slide less far, and your own ram is charging to hit straight back.
  • When the outer band of the ring flashes red it is about to fall, so get towards the middle.
  • As a ghost, drop your boulder just inside a wrestler who is near the edge, so the blast pushes them out.

Start Sumo Smash in three steps

  1. Open play.codewithshamil.com on a TV or laptop and press Host a game.
  2. Connect each phone to the same WiFi and scan the QR code on the screen.
  3. The first player picks Sumo Smash from the menu on their phone.
