Odd One Out

A hidden word party game played on your TV, with your phone as the controller.

  • 4-8 players
  • Multiplayer
  • Plays in the browser

Odd One Out is a hidden word party game for four to eight players. Every phone shows the same secret word except one: the Odd One Out sees only the category. Players take turns typing a short clue, the clues appear on the big screen, and then everyone votes in secret for the player they think is bluffing. A game is three rounds, with a new Odd One Out each round.

How to play Odd One Out

  1. Each round every phone shows the same secret word and its category, except one player, who sees only the category.
  2. Players type a short clue on their phone in turn, and the table goes round twice. Each clue has 12 seconds. A clue that contains the secret word is blocked.
  3. After the clues everyone votes on their phone for the Odd One Out. The player with the most votes is accused; if the top votes are tied, nobody is accused and the Odd One Out escapes.
  4. If the Odd One Out is caught, they get one guess at the secret word. A right guess steals the round.
  5. Points: a vote for the Odd One Out scores 2, and 2 more if the room catches them and they miss the word. An Odd One Out who escapes, or who is caught but guesses the word, scores 3.

Controls

A text box with Send and Pass for your clue, then one button per player to vote. While the others give clues you can tap a player to mark a hunch; the big screen shows how many hunches each player has.

Tips

  • Give a clue that only someone who knows the word would think of, but not one so obvious that the Odd One Out can guess the word from it.
  • As the Odd One Out, listen to the first clues before your turn and give a clue that fits all of them.
  • Watch the second time round: the Odd One Out often changes direction once they have worked out the word.

Start Odd One Out in three steps

  1. Open play.codewithshamil.com on a TV or laptop and press Host a game.
  2. Connect each phone to the same WiFi and scan the QR code on the screen.
  3. The first player picks Odd One Out from the menu on their phone.
